Nouvelle Chicane Inspirations:

Friday night December 9th, Nouvelle Chicane Eyewear visited the new exhibition at the MET museum on 5th Ave entitled Women Dressing Women. The exhibition was assembled by the famous and revered Costume Institute and its benefactor, the annual MET Gala
The exhibit includes dress designs from 1910 through today, including designers from Europe such as Jeanne Lanvin, Elsa Schiaparelli, and Madeleine Vionnet, and American houses such as Ann Lowe, Claire McCardell, and Isabel Toledo, Iris van Herpen, Rei Kawakubo, Anifa Mvuemba, and Simone Rocha.
The challenge: “find the ideal pairings between the finest dress at the exhibition and a Nouvelle Chicane frame from our latest collection.
More to come……

DECEMBER 7, 2023 Brooklyn NYC: Nouvelle Chicane travelled from midtown (M to F train) to York St Station in DUMBO to visit the A.I.R. Gallery. Tomoko Amaki Abe had some interesting pieces on show that used light and dark moving projections. These were the most inspiring of the evening. The monochrome structures have similarities with what we use in our Forte frame.
More inspiration from the Dumbo first Thursday on December 7
Right under the Manhattan Bridge we saw this road cone inspired Christmas tree.

Occasionally we are asked to make custom colors for our clients. We ask for a color swatch, a picture, a sample of the color 🌈 or even the Pantone code color.
Here is an example of how we dyed a white pair of our frames 😎 to a coral color
You can do the same to an old pair of frames but you should make sure you know the material they are made from. You can always test first, but this is how we do it at Nouvelle Chicane.
you will need the following :
1000 grit sand paper, 8″ stainless steel pot, micellar water💦, tongs, a toothbrush, rit dye of your choice (always dye from a lighter color to a darker shade), white vinegar (1.25 cups), hair dryer .
Remove the lenses first. Make sure you put in an envelope or bag with them labeled (left or right and top/ bottom) Set aside for reinstallation later.
Prep the frames by lightly sanding all surfaces with 1000 git paper,
1) soak 🚿 and clean🧽 the frames with Micellar 🚰 water and a tooth brush. rinse 🛁 thoroughly to remove the 🧼 soap, then leave the frames to soak in water until you are ready to 🧪 dye. You can add a shot glass of vinegar too. This opens the material pores and allows the dye to penetrate further.
2) fill a stainless steel pot, 8 inch diameter, 7 inch tall with water about 3/4 full. This allows the frames to tumble in the liquid. Make sure the frames fit in the pot in the fully open position.
3) warm the water and add 1.25 cups of white vinegar.
4) carefully add 50 milliliters of coral rit dye (or your color of choice) we always suggest going to darker tone than the original frame color.
5) submerge frames 🤿 into the liquid, for minimum of 20 minutes continually poke and push / maneuver the frames. Open and close the temples, you want to expose all surfaces. Adjust the heat 🌡 so the frames roll 🔄 in the boil like below. see slow motion video.
6) remove the frames with tongs from the hot liquid. Leave the pot on the stove you may need to return the frames.
7) Wash frames under the cool water from your tap 🚰. Dry with hair dryer 🔥. Check color. if not dark enough put back in the pot 🍵. Add more dye or water as necessary. Wet frames always look darker than when they are dry. Take this into account.
8) once completed the dye process, remove the frames, rinse 💦 and let the frames dry.
9) sand again very lightly as necessary to remove any roughness that occurred.
10) submerge the frames in water for at least 30 minutes ⌛️ to remove any excess dye. they always lighten 💡 up.
11) wash again 💦 with micellar water and tooth brush. rinse and let dry.
12) reinstall lenses, you may use the hair dryer to warm the frames to allow the lenses to pop back in. You can clear coat the frames to seal in the color but that glosses up the finish which you may or may not prefer.
Good luck.

Nouvelle Chicane had a problem; the MET Museum had the inspiration for our solution. A beautiful eyeglass case was the result.
Nouvell Chicane artistic frames are large and bold and do not fit standard carrying cases. Special ordered cases from the far east were an option, but we decided to go a different route.
It all started with a day trip to The MET museum on 5th Avenue and 81st Street. The MET is home to countless artifacts from 1000s of years ago.
It quickly became clear that boxes, trunks and containers hold a special place in the history of the world and particularly meaningful to the owners. Even today, iconic brands such as Louis Vuitton pride themselves on their history of boxe and trunk construction. Carefully crafted small containers held everything from snuff to cigarettes, to jewelry, to makeup, to paints and brushes, and even funeral ashes. Opulent carefully constructed boxes and cases were and are held in high regard. One of the purest examples is the Faberge Egg which contains a prized hen in its yolk and ultimately the Russian crown. Nouvelle Chicane Eyewear will be protected by the case shell in the same way as the enamel shell of the Faberge Egg.
It was clear that the Nouvelle Chicane box must be constructed from a precious metal such as copper or stainless steel. The case takes form of a 9 inch x 4 inch box with a snug fitting lid. They are hand cut with shears from 14 gage stainless steel or copper. The template is form bent on a sheet metal brake in our studio. The corners tabs are then drilled and pop riveted using an aircraft rivet forming tool to secure and strengthen the joints.

The cases are then carefully lined with colorful felt from the NYC garment district. The external metal surfaces are polished with fine abrasives and home crafted pastes to achieve a jewelry like finish. For a final touch, we etch the logo into the lid of our case as you can see here in our etching video.
These cases are available to our exclusive clientele at Charlotte Jones Opticians

November 24th, 2023, New York NY: Charlotte Jones Opticians officially debuted Nouvelle Chicane’s L’Orbitalli Riviera bold white frame today.
L’Orbitalli Boutique Riviera Sunglass frame is now on display at her garment district boutique on 509 Ninth Avenue. This frame has throwback inspired 1960s styling making a bold fashion statement. This same frame debuted in Nouvelle Chicane’s very first collection at Paris Fashion Week and remains a French favorite and international standout. The name is based upon the Orbital bones that define our facial structures. The Classic Carbon Black L’Orbitalli is our favorite, but white is a pure stunner.. We only use high quality lenses, including gradient and flash mirror. This light, comfortable frame is our most head turning style. Made in the USA (NYC). Styled forever.

The Nouvelle Chicane studio is neighbors with the The MET in midtown Manhattan. We use this for inspiration and influence in our design process.
